Negligible Pool Filter pressure. Is that bad?
I have a Hayward cartridge filter and Hayward dual-speed 1HP pump. The pump is overheating and turning off all the time now (not sure what is the issue but thinking of replacing it rather than fixing it as it is old). In the meantime, we are running the pump at half the speed (it is a dual speed pump) which does not cause overheating until we fix or replace the pump. But running it half the speed reduces the pressure on the filter from 12psi to almost negligible (2-3PSI maybe). I know high pressure is not necessarily good, but is low pressure also a bad thing? I realize not as much water being pumped as quickly, hence the low pressure. We're running the pump almost 24/7.
The cartridge filter is new and I don't think that is the issue (presumably, it is just showing very little pressure due to the pump operating at much lower speed). Looking into new variable speed pumps that can be programmed but not decided yet.
Although mine wasn't heating up I recently experienced a severe pressure drop in my pool system and increased pump noise. The impeller in the pump was clogged by debris. As soon as it was cleared, the system returned to normal. Pressure drops can also be caused by foreign objects clogging the return lines from the bottom drains or skimmers. If you have a Hayward pump similar to mine, and it sounds like you do, you turn off the pump, open the basket cover, remove the basket, and feel inside the impeller housing for the impeller. You'll feel debris if it's clogging the impeller openings. If your hand is too big to get in there get someone else to help or call a service tech.
