Broken Hayward (inground pool sand filter) Control Valve. See details.?
I have a large hayward sand filter and the valve is not operating correctly. The level appears to be mechanically disconnected as it will not spring back up after being depressed and swivels easily. The position of the lever is on filter but will only backwash when the pump is on.
Can I fix this myself?
The spider gasket (as mentioned in one of the previous posts) is not a bad idea to replace; however, it's not the total cause of the problem. The fact that the handle does not spring back up is more indicative of the problem. Either the spring on the shaft of the valve is worn / broken, or the handle itself is worn. (There is a rounded area on the bottom of the handle that acts to lift the rotor off the body of the valve when the handle is depressed.) In time, what happens is that this rounded area flattens out (often because a nylon bearing under it wears or breaks). The gasket could be fine; if the rotor does not sit against it, it will not seal.
This assembly (the top / handle / rotor) is available as one piece (the easiest way), or individual pieces (on older valves). Some of the newer Hayward valves are a bit different. (it would help to know the model # on the valve).
