Overflow vs Area drains in a swimming pool?
I'm having a pool built, and since we often get massive downpours here in Houston, TX, I want to have them put in some type of overflow drain so I dont have the pool overflow when its raining heavily. I asked the builder about putting one in and they said they can tie the overflow drain into "area drains" which drain to the street for $1200-$1500 extra. I said "can't I just get an overflow drain" and they said you can, but without the area drains, in a heavy rain it may not work well. I don't understand this, wouldn't an overflow drain just drain into the same PVC line that the pool drains into when emptying it? Are they just trying to sell me something fancy I don't need, and would just an overflow drain work well enough?
First of all, your usual water level is going to be several inches below the top of your pool. You would have to have an awful LOT of rain to overflow your pool!!!
I agree with you that tying into your PVC drain line ought to be enough for "unusual" circumstances.
Do any of your neighbors have pools? What do they have? Do they wish that they had had an "area" drain?? If not, I would pass!
Good Luck!
