AQ. system Millennium 1000 filter ???'s?
I have recently pruchased a 10 hex tank set that had the millennium 1000 filter. The system was used by the pet store that I go to all the time, but they did not have the filter instructions. I need to know how my vaulves should be set and if i need anthoer type of cartridge other then the plastic one with the x pattern in it......please help
These kinds of filters use two types of cartridges, it's your choice which one to use.
The first is one where the filter sponge and carbon are integrated into one cartridge. The entire unit needs to be replaced about every month or so, depending on fish load. It looks like a tray of carbon wrapped with a sponge.
The second kind is one that you can disassemble. You open up the tray and just replace the carbon portion and instead of replacing the sponge, you squeeze it off in old tank water (not in the tank though!) This way, the beneficial bacteria that helps break down fish waste isn't having to re-establish itself every time you replace a cartridge. Again, this needs to be done about every month or so and I think would be a better choice.
About the valve, I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about. If you mean the intake pipe that sucks up water, and there's a dial to increase the openings on the intake pipe, just make sure it's opened up all the way. Unless you have very small, weak fish, then you can close it up a bit to lessen the suction, but not too much or you can wear out the motor faster.
The problem with this filter is that whichever cartridge you pick, you'll have to replace something every month. I'd recommend a brand like Aquaclear where if you decide to run it without carbon, you don't have to replace anything each month. Just do regular sponge cleanings in tank water. They're a couple dollars more, but you save money in the long run by not having to constantly replace cartridges.
