what aquarium filter media type is better?
can anyone list all the types of filter types and which is better?
IE. carbon?
i see.
i also heard of sand and gravel filters. what are good about those?
Update: Sand and gravel both have less surface area per gram than activated carbon.
Old post:
Activated carbon is a great filter media because "one gram of activated carbon has a surface area of approximately 500 m² (or about 2.17 tennis courts)"
A gram is about as much as you can pinch together between your thumb and index finger.
wow
Filter media should have as high of a surface area as possible, so activated carbon is a great choice. It's also fairly easy to get ahold of and not too expensive. This makes it perfect as a filter media.
Well, technically the perfect filter media with the maximum amount of surface area is the Menger sponge http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menger_sponge ["the Menger sponge simultaneously exhibits an infinite surface area and encloses zero volume"] but not many fish keepers are also engineers or mathematicians, so you don't usually hear people in the fish community talking about it. It's also not possible to build in real life, lol, but I suppose that would be the "perfect" filter media (most possible surface area).
Personally, I have both an activated carbon pad in my waterfall filter and a sea sponge with an air stone stuck in it and a bubble stream coming out of it in my tank. It works very well.
