Spa....Concrete pad or crushed stone ....which one better?
I have recently ordered a 8x8 spa that with water will weigh over 4,500 lbs. I have an area that is fairly level that I am going to put it, surrounding it with a ground level deck on three sides with the forth side being app 15 inches from the top lip. This is my first spa and don't know if I need to incur the cost of a 10x10 4" thick concrete pad (4000psi) or just 6" of crushed stone (unknown psi). Any help?
the crushed stone would have the advantage of good drainage. Water, from draining the spa and from rain water, can get away. If you put it on cement, you might get water standing between the spa and cement; causing mold and mildew. BUT, I would make sure that the stone has settled before putting the spa on it. Soak it down, long and hard, with a garden hose so the stone settles. And, take a piece of 4x4 post and use it as a ram-rod to pack the stone down.
