New Betta In a 5 Gallon With Power Filter.?
I got a new betta today at Pet Supplies Plus and their bettas were free! I was so shocked. The grand opening was yesterday and the bettas were given to them as a gift. My poor betta Sparky died last night. I got a Red VT betta. He is really cool and active and he flares at the filter in my tank and at nothing when I have the tank light on. I added some chemicals that Add Beneficial Bacteria to the tank. His fins look a little clamped probably because of when he was in his tiny cup. When he swims by the filter, it looks like he struggles to get away and when he does it, he flares. Is this normal? Is the current too strong? Also, I feed him Betta Pellets and he spit it out 30 minutes after I feed it to him. He has been through a lot since I feed him. Why could he be spitting it out?
is your tank heated? it would be best to get him a heater for his little tank so he doesn't get unnessarily stressed. they prefer 75F to 82F. Cooler waters and fluctuations can affect their digestion and health. If he's spitting food out at you it's either too big to deal with or he's full. (or blocked up if he hasn't eaten in the past two days) If you suspect he's blocked, fast him for another day, then try a little piece of green pea that you've taken the shell off of. tiny tiny piece and mush it so he can easily get it in his little mouth. most bettas love peas and it really gets their digestive systems going again.
did you do a water change after Sparky died?? How big of a water change? if it was too big, or the water is too dirty, then you may have a bit of an ammonia or nitrite spike in the water, making it toxic for your new betta. Make sure you test it.
As far as the filter, it may be too strong for your new guy.. Bettas aren't built for high currents b/c of the flowy fins and prefer calmer waters...or at least shelter from the currents so they can rest. Can you turn the outflow down at all? or change the direction of the spout to spray into a plant or something to break up the current? Filtration is better than none, but see if you can slow it down, or go get a new low flow filter..$10-$15 for that size of tank.
