Cleaning the pool.help!?
Im just about to start cleaning my grandfathers swimming pool. I know how to shock it and run the little polaris vaccuum and everything. I was wondering would it be better to change the sand in the sandfilter AFTER or BEFORE I get the pool blue and clean? (right now its the typical algea green). My grandpops cannot remember when the last time it was changed so im going to go ahead and change it anyways..Oh and is there a certain procedure on putting the sand in the filter? Its a hayward.
The usual way to determine if the filter sand needs changing is by checking the pump pressure after you back flush it. It you clean it by back flushing and the pressure doesn't drop to an acceptable level then you need to change the sand.
I would change it after. I would use it and you will likely have to clean it several times before things start to clear up well. I would only change it if that pressure doesn't come back down. The reason is that you will pulling a whole of dead algae in to it at first and plugging it up.
What is exactly the correct pressure for clean sand depends on your particular system. If you change it now you might want to note at what pressure it runs with new sand.
And you want to use your regular chlorine was well as the shock. The shock is for raising the chlorine levels real high for a short period of time. It goes away rather fast then you are back to growing stuff when it drops, dissipates. The regular chlorine lasts much longer. Use both.
I think you are suppose to get your chlorine levels up to normal then use the shock.
Good Luck.
