Pool Sand filter backwash question?
After I backwash my pool filter and switch it back to filter, dirty water and sand come out of the returns in the pool.
I have a sand filter with a Hayward multi-port valve on top to change filter operation and a 1.5 HP pump. I always turn off the pump when switching the valve around. I have tried the rinse setting before returning to normal filter mode and it still does the same problem. I recently replaced the spider gasket and the top portion of the multi-port valve and handle.
It's good that you switch off the pump when swapping valve positions. Not doing that does blow the "spider" key stem gasket. You should use rinse yes. Why you're getting what you see can be one of two things.
1/ The sand bed is saturated and you haven't backwashed to clear and rinsed well enough.
2/ If your multiport is ok ( you replaced the key stem gasket,,,you would know if it was deformed by your heater if you have one) I would suspect the laterals at the bottom of the filter tank. If the filter wasn't drained properly at closing or if the filter is old, the laterals may be cracked or the hub is. If it's an older filter, the laterals may even be worn to the point that the slits in them are now big enough to let sand through and not just water.
That's it. Sand filters are pretty basic. It's one of the two. It won't be the stand pipe between the laterals and multiport unless you abused the heck out of it during the multiport refit and cracked it. Hayward's plastic is what I would call the most robust there is. It would have been tough to do unless you were on a mission.
