What is Free Air Resonance for Subwoofer?
Okay I have a RE SE-X 12 inch dual 2 ohm and I set my low pass filter a little below 200 hz on my amp, but it says the RE SE-x is Free Air Resonance -Fs at 25.1 Hz. What does that mean? My sub is in a sealed box.
In a nutshell the free air resonance(fs) of any driver is the frequency at which the driver vibrates most efficiently when operated without an enclosure. It is also at its maximum impedance at this frequency. The resonance frequency is determined by the mass of the cone and the suspension compliance(springiness). For woofers this means the lower limit of its frequency response before acoustic output falls off rapidly. Generally, the larger the speaker, the greater the mass and compliance, so the lower the free air resonance. Speakers with heavy magnets also tend to have a lower fs. The fs increases when the speaker is placed in an enclosure because the compliance stiffens due to the now smaller volume of air inside the box. That is then called the fb. In order to determine fs or fb you need some type of frequency generator or cd with low frequency test tones, an analog AC volt meter, and a 50 ohm 20 watt power resistor in series with + output of the testing amplifier. What you are doing is testing the voltage across the voicecoil terminals. For testing fs(a woofer in free air) or a sealed box, start at 50hz and increase or decrease the frequency until you achieve maximum voltage. Whatever frequency achieves maximum voltage is the resonance frequency. For a ported box there will be two voltage peaks and a dip in between. The dip is the resonant(or tuning) frequency of the port. Needless to say, the size of the box has alot to do with the final results. A woofer's Fs is just one(of a minimum of 3 required) of the Thiele Small parameters that are used to calculate an enclosure's desired response. The other two are VAS and Q but this is a whole different chapter. And yes, this IS in a nutshell.
