Air Conditioners – An In-Depth Look
Air conditioners use the evaporation of a refrigerant to cool off hot air. An air conditioner's mechanics work much the same as they do in a refrigerator. An air conditioner has what's called an evaporation cycle. The UC unit's compressor basically smashes refrigerant together until it gets hot and is under very high pressure. The hot refrigerant goes through a set of coils which cools it back off, where it becomes a liquid. The liquid refrigerant runs through an expansion valve, which makes the liquid evaporate and become very cold and depressurized. The now cold gas runs through a set of coils that allows the gas to take heat from the air, thereby cooling it and your home. Oil is mixed in with the refrigerant to make sure the compressor, your AC unit's vital organ, stays lubricated.
Air conditioners don't just cool the air in your home. To fully understand air conditioning, you must understand it serves three functions: to cool the air, to clean the air and to dehumidify the air.
During the summer months, humidity is highest. Heat from the sun causes water all over your half of the planet to evaporate. Wind from the movement of the earth, tides of the oceans and contrasts between hot and cool air currents cause strong summer storms and hurricanes. Humidity in the home is an important factor to feeling comfortable. When humidity is too high, you don't feel cool. When it is too low, you can suffer from nose bleeds, dry skin, etc. Air conditioners almost never pull out too much humidity from the air. Rather, sensors in the AC unit will tell the unit to stop dehumidifying.
Air conditioners also clean the air. New AC units do a much better job of cleaning the air than they once did. Your air conditioner will pull in hot, dirty air much like a vacuum pulls in air. Before the air ever reaches the compressor, it will go through a filtration system. The best air conditioners are fitted with some sort of HEPA filtration system or multiple filters. When a filter gets full or clogged, the air conditioner will not work at optimum levels and works harder than it should to cool the air in our home. This can "burn up" the compressor or other important components of your AC unit.
