Hayward-PumpSwimming pools should have a pump to circulate the water through the filter.  The pump and filter play a crucial role in maintaining the water quality of your pool.  This is for sanitation as well as just clarity.  There are several things that come into play when deciding on the proper pool pump or pool filter. So what are the considerations?

  • HP – Typically the horsepower of the pump will determine just how much water the pump can move.  You need to look at the flow rate of the pump and see how often this will circulate the volume of the pool.
  • Flow Rate – GPM (Gallons per minute) or GPH (gallons per hour) – This is the flow rate.  If you had a pump that recirculated 100 gallons per hour then it would take 100 hours to circulate 10,000 gallons through the pump.   You might want the pump to run about 8-10 hours per day in summer and 4-6 hours per day in the winter to get the proper amount of water circulated.  As a rule of thumb you need to turn the water over in your pool once per day.

  • Efficiency – There are two types of efficiency.  There is the efficiency of the motor.  There is also the efficiency of the pump impeller.  Both come into play to have the perfect pump.

Swimming Pool Filters have some other considerations.  There are several types.  The method of cleaning and the price for new cartridges varies quite a lot.  It is important to keep the filter clean as it is a restriction in the flow of the pump, increases back pressure and reduces efficiency.

  • Sand type – This is typically used on very large in-ground pools.  Just as it sounds it is full of sand to capture particulate matter.  On the plus side you don’t change the sand but ever few years.  On the negative side it is a big pain compared to the cartridge filter.
  • Cardtridge type – This one has either replaceable or cleanable filter elements.
